Congratulations on being selected as a member of the Ocean Breeze Rescue Team! In order to go through the Ellis & Associates International Lifeguard Training Program you must first complete a skills test.
The test includes:
- Swim a minimum of 50 yards for Shallow Water Lifeguards or 200 yards for Special Facilities Lifeguards using either front crawl (freestyle) or breaststroke without resting
- Perform a Feet First surface dive to retrieve a 10-lb brick from depths of 5 feet for Shallow Water Lifeguards and up to depths of 10 feet for Special Facilities Lifeguards and bring it to the surface.
- Tread Water for 2 minutes without the use of your hands for Special Facilities Lifeguards. No tread for Shallow Water Lifeguards
- Shallow Water Lifeguards must swim underwater for a distance of 10 feet.
You may not continue in the course if you cannot complete #1, #2, #3, and #4.
You must attend all days of training.

- Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at Ocean Breeze Waterpark 9am-5pm
- Thursday, April 13, 2023, at Virginia Wesleyan University 10am-3pm
- Friday, April 14, 2023, at Ocean Breeze Waterpark 9am-5pm
Before you attend the Lifeguard Class you must complete your online course in Pectora. You have worked hard to become a member of our Rescue Team, be sure to continue that tremendous effort by practicing the skills portion before your lifeguard class.
At each class period you should have:
- A Swimsuit (appropriate and comfortable for swimming) and towel
- Dry clothes (for after you’re in-water portion of the class)
- Note taking Supplies.
- You will be given a lunch break on all full days. Please bring food or money for lunch.
- Comfortable shoes/ shoes with a backstrap
COVID-19 Procedures:
All lifeguard candidates will be expected to do a self-health check at home before arriving at Virginia Wesleyan University or Ocean Breeze Waterpark. The self-health check should include checking your temperature and asking these questions:
Are you or have you recently (within last 10 days) experienced any of the following signs or symptoms?
- Chills or Fever of 100.4 or greater
- Cough
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue
- Muscle or body aches
- Headache
- New loss of taste or smell
- Sore throat
- Congestion or runny nose
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea
In the last 10 days, have you been in close contact with anyone exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 or has tested positive for COVID-19? Close contact is defined as being within 6 feet or less of a person for 15 minutes or more.
Is anyone in your household exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 or has tested positive for COVID-19?

An international renowned, hands-on lifeguard course that is highly interactive and physically enduring. The course is a comprehensive training program that promotes objective driven and performance based training for individuals wishing to obtain a new ILTP™ certification for shallow water, pool, special facilities, and/or open water, in various water depths ranging from less than 5` feet of water up to any depth and/or open water. Our International Lifeguard Training Programs (ILTP™) are designed and intended to be delivered as part of an integrated curriculum that includes water rescue techniques, First Aid, Health Care Provider CPR, Emergency Oxygen Support, and Automated External Defibrillation as a first responder. This course requires students to perform each concept taught in the course, through student demonstrations of all skills concepts and skills instructed. Students will participate in lifeguarding roles throughout the class and are expected to perform lifeguard duties as first responders. Students will perform on deck and in water simulations, drills and exercises for rescue techniques as an individual and in team scenarios as part of multiple rescuers drills. The ILTP Lifeguard course materials are available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Thai and simplified Chinese languages. Students that successfully complete the ILTP Lifeguard course obtain an ILTP certificate that is valid for one (1) year. Annual renewal is required. Successful candidates can earn anywhere from 2.2 to 2.6 IACET CEUs depending on the level of certification achieved in the program.
