Class Details

Training Location: The Gateway Family YMCA - Rahway Branch, 1564 Irving St, Rahway, NJ 07065.

Training Times: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM (Renewal Class is on 2/15/2025)

Attendance on ALL days is required to be eligible for certification. 

Remember to bring the following to class:

  • Bathing Suit (2)
  • Towels (2)
  • Warm Clothing/Change of Clothes
  • Food/Snacks
  • Pen/Paper for Notes 

Additional clothes for warmth and light snacks to have throughout the day are recommended. 

Important: Be sure all MANDATORY online work is completed before coming to your in-person lifeguard class. 

  1. All 19 Modules - YOU ARE HERE! 
  2. ILTP Final Exam on Pectora - You will receive an additional enrollment email when enrolled in the Final Exam. Use the same login as you did to complete your online modules. This will be added to your Pectora account as a “Class” after finishing your modules although please contact your local staffing representative if you do not see it!

Online work must be started by February 10, 2024. You may be asked to reschedule your class if you do not start the online work by the respective date.

Congratulations! You are receiving this Training Agreement because you have successfully applied, interviewed, and registered for a Lifeguard Training Class with the American Pool New Jersey office. The cost of the training class includes a $25 non-refundable registration fee applicable only to American Pool Employees - New Hires. This offer is not valid for anyone who has not applied or interviewed with our office. Terms and conditions apply.

We want you to enjoy your summer working for us! We have outlined specific expectations for you to understand. The $25.00 enrollment fee reflects your agreement to work the minimum number of days based on your certification date during the 2025 season. Please see the detailed table below. If these expectations are not met, the employee may be responsible for covering the difference between the ticket purchase price and the full cost of the class. The cost of the lifeguard class for non-employees of American Pool NJ is $350.00. If you have any questions regarding this information, please feel free to contact us at 877-796-7665.

Course Cancellation Policies

Low Enrollment - There is a minimum requirement of 5 participants for each class to run. American Pool reserves the right to cancel any class that does not meet the minimum requirement. If a class is canceled due to low enrollment, students enrolled in that class will be allowed to transfer to the next available class free of charge.

Inclement Weather - If a class is canceled due to inclement weather, students in that class will be able to transfer to the next available class free of charge. 

Participant Cancellation - If a student wishes to cancel their Lifeguard Training class at any point up to the start date of the class, the $25 registration fee is forfeited. If a student “No-Shows” to a class, there will be no refund given. Please review our No-Show Policy for more details. To cancel your class, please call 877-796-7665. Please include your full name, phone number, and course information.

Rescheduling - If a student wishes to reschedule their class, they should notify American Pool as soon as possible. The student will have to enroll again in a class that better suits their availability with a $25 registration fee. We understand emergencies can happen. If this is the case, please contact the Safety & Training Director by calling 877-796-7665 immediately. This will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. 

Attendance Policy - Prompt arrival from all participants is needed to successfully run the lifeguard class. Anyone who is more than 15 minutes late after the scheduled start time of the course may be asked to reschedule at the Instructor’s discretion. The student must be present for the entire duration of the class.

Second Attempt - If a student is asked to retake the class by an Instructor, that student will be able to take a future class free of charge. Only one additional attempt will be provided. 

No-Show Policy - We encourage you to contact us if you are running late or not able to attend. If you do not show up to a class, it will be considered a “No-Show” and you will have to sign up for a future class with a $25.00 non-refundable fee. 

Online Work - All online work, which includes the Modules and Final Exam, must be completed before the start date of your class.

Course Description

An international renowned, hands-on lifeguard course that is highly interactive and physically enduring. The course is a comprehensive training program that promotes objective driven and performance based training for individuals wishing to obtain a new ILTP™ certification for shallow water, pool, special facilities, and/or open water, in various water depths ranging from less than 5` feet of water up to any depth and/or open water. Our International Lifeguard Training Programs (ILTP™) are designed and intended to be delivered as part of an integrated curriculum that includes water rescue techniques, First Aid, Health Care Provider CPR, Emergency Oxygen Support, and Automated External Defibrillation as a first responder.  This course requires students to perform each concept taught in the course, through student demonstrations of all skills concepts and skills instructed.  Students will participate in lifeguarding roles throughout the class and are expected to perform lifeguard duties as first responders.  Students will perform on deck and in water simulations, drills and exercises for rescue techniques as an individual and in team scenarios as part of multiple rescuers drills.  The ILTP Lifeguard course materials are available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Thai and simplified Chinese languages.  Students that successfully complete the ILTP Lifeguard course obtain an ILTP certificate that is valid for one (1) year. Annual renewal is required. Successful candidates can earn anywhere from 2.2 to 2.6 IACET CEUs depending on the level of certification achieved in the program.
