Course Description

In this course, participants will identify observable drowning and swimmer distress indicators and distinguish subtle drowning behaviors from typical non-distress activity. Participants will apply purposeful, deliberate, and focused scanning techniques without reliance on peripheral vision, and analyze environmental and situational factors that increase detection difficulty. Learners will evaluate the limits of common safety assumptions and describe when to pause and extend observation of a swimmer rather than making an assumption, supporting timely recognition and response in aquatic environments.
